Best and Worst Looks from the 2018 Met Gala

Best and Worst Looks from the 2018 Met Gala

The first Monday of May marks the annual Met Gala Ball held at the The Met in New York City, and last night’s was the most lavish and extravagant one yet. With the theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” celebrities and fashion icons gathered to celebrate the opening of the museum’s newest exhibit featuring looks designed and donated by legendary fashion designers and the Vatican. I’m breaking down the best and worst looks of the night based off celebrities’ execution of the theme and/or lack of recognition of the theme.

Best

Rihanna in John Galliano

The singer 100% owned the night. The unofficial Met Gala queen and co-chair of this year's ball rocked her embellished mini dress-cape combo paired with jeweled Christian Louboutins and stunningly intricate headpiece. She definitely wins the award for best look of the night.

Zendaya in Versace

Zendaya came with her research DONE. Her Joan of Arc-inspired look was beautifully executed and strayed from the traditional Catholic look for a more medieval look that still fit the theme. Well done.

Blake Lively in Versace

The former Gossip Girl actress clearly got her inspiration from the architecture of churches and cathedrals themselves and absolutely nailed it. She always delivers on the red carpet, though, so I expected nothing less. Her headpiece was effortless and flawless, which truly was the icing on the cake for this look.

Chadwick Boseman in Versace

The Black Panther was in disguise last night in this elegant cream suit and was the king of the night. The gold embellishments totally tied with the crosses on his chest and shoes and made the off-white ten times more stunning.

Emilia Clarke in Dolce & Gabbana

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke looked so beautiful in this black lace gown with golden floral embellishments and cathedral-style paintings throughout the dress. Her makeup and Game of Thrones-style crown and hair were equally adorable as well.

Winnie Harlow in Tommy Hilfiger

Model Winnie Harlow gave us serious angel vibes last night in this effortless white gown with her breathtaking headdress and jewelry.

Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren

She stunned in this jeweled headdress and simply elegant burgundy velvet gown.

Solange in Iris Van Herpen

Solange put her own spin on the Catholic theme with her a black attire topped with a gold halo crown. Bonus points for tastefully wearing a durag on the red carpet.

Jennifer Lopez in Balmain

Jennifer Lopez showed up and showed out in this diva-meets-Pope look, totally embodying the theme while staying true to her JLo-esque fashion.

Kim Kardashian in Versace

The reality star sits far down on the list due to the fact that I felt she played it safe with the theme, but her look was probably my favorite fashion-wise. This Versace gold, mesh, cross-studded gown accentuated her curves beautifully and glowed at the gala. Not to mention she had the best makeup out of anyone there (props to her makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic).

Virgil Abloh in Louis Vuitton

The creative director behind Louis Vuitton and Off-White stunned in this self-made suit paired with sky blue Off-White sneakers (also made by Abloh himself). He managed to also design several other looks while still making it onto the best dressed list along with some of his other creations.

Greta Gerwig in The Row

The Ladybird director turned heads in this priest-style gown in the best way possible. Many saw the look as unflattering; however, I thought it was abstract and dramatic and applaud her for taking a major fashion risk.

Jasmine Sanders in H&M

The Golden Barbie took home the award for Most Likely to be Made Into a Disney Princess, but I felt that she played it too safe to gain the same recognition as Rihanna and Zendaya. Her golden H&M dress was beautiful regardless and the immaculate rose detailing in her braid is my new hair inspiration for the year.

Donald Glover in Gucci

The Atlanta star's look was safe from the front, daring from the back. I liked its sense of fashion-forward, minimalistic Catholicism while also delivering cool and collected vibes. I just wish he would've taken a little more inspiration from the church rather than the church-goer.

Worst

Liza Koshy in Alessandra Rich

I honestly have no idea who this is; I had to look up her name and information to figure out who she was and why she decided to even show up dressed like this, but apparently she was an interviewer. Regardless, I felt that there was little to no effort put into this look for the biggest ball of the year. Next.

Selena Gomez in Coach

This Coach dress really just did not do anything for me, and I guess it didn't do much to anyone else either. Not to mention the unfortunate spray tan that was done too late to be reversed in time for the big event. This was a major flop for me.

Hailey Baldwin in Tommy Hilfiger

Hailey Baldwin has impeccable street style but tends to usually flop or get lost in the crowd on the red carpet. This look felt too much like a high school prom attendee and not enough of a major celebrity attending the biggest fashion and art event. Plus, I'm not a fan of the pink hair on her.

Kendall Jenner in Off-White

If I were a celebrity like Rihanna of Chadwick Boseman who showed up and showed out, I would personally be offended by celebrities who just disregard the theme entirely and dress however they would like. And that is exactly what Kendall Jenner did in this basic white jumpsuit. Someone on Twitter said it reminded them of the "Stop Wasting Toilet Paper" Challenge and now that's all I see.

Kris Jenner in Tommy Hilfiger

Unfortunately, the momager just missed the mark with this look. To me, the dress looked like there was a bit of a sizing issue as it seems to look a bit bulky in the chest and torso area. Kris and daughter Kendall should've taken some style tips from their respective daughter and half-sister to nail this theme and end up on the best-dressed list rather than the worst.

Shailene Woodley in Ralph Lauren

This look was just a bit tragic all around. The Big Little Lies actress went for a medieval Catholic look like The Greatest Showman actress Zendaya, but really seemed to flop and give off more of a Lord Farquaad vibe. Props for trying to be unique, though.

Nicki Minaj in Oscar de la Renta

I just was really not a fan of this look. The red sequins seemed a little cheesy to me and lacked the elegance this theme exuded. The headdress was interesting but would've been better with a different look. Fortunately for Nicki, The now-viral picture of her and Cardi B speaking makes up for this atrocity.
